How to reach Vienna and the University of Vienna (Main Building, Dr.-Karl-Lueger-Ring 1, 1010 Wien)

Arrival at the airport

Information-desks can be found in the arrival hall, at terminal 2, and at the bus terminal. There are several ways of travelling from the airport to Vienna city. (see http://english.viennaairport.com/)

By City Airport Train (CAT) and U-Bahn (underground/subway): The fastest way to reach the CAT: After you collect your baggage and pass through customs, walk straight ahead through the arrivals hall und take the elevator to the CAT platform. At the airport, you will find CAT ticket machines in the baggage claim area, the arrival hall, on the way to the platform and directly at the platform.
Single tickets: EUR 9, return tickets EUR 16, online tickets available
Travel Time: 16 minutes
Frequency: Every half hour between 6 am and 11.30 pm.

The CAT will take you directly into the city of Vienna and terminates at the city air terminal within the Wien-Mitte railway station. From here you can take the underground/subway lines U3 or U4 to your desired destinations. Directly after exiting the City Air Terminal/station you will also find a taxi stand. In order to reach the University you can either take a taxi, or you take the underground line U3 (direction Ottakring) until the station Volkstheater and change onto the line U2 (direction Schottenring). Get off at the station Schottentor-Universität, which is directly located at the University of Vienna. Ticket for the Underground EUR 1.50.

By Regional Railway System S7 (direction Floridsdorf): You can also use the regional railway ÖBB, line S7, instead of the CAT. You need to get on the trains in direction Floridsdorf. This line will also take you to the Wien-Mitte-railway station, but with several stops, therefore at a slightly longer travel time. From here you can take the underground/subway lines U3 or U4 to your desired destination or take a taxi.
Travel Time S7: about 25 minutes
Frequency: every 30 minutes (from 4.55 am to 22.40 pm)
Fare: EUR 3.

By taxi: You can find a taxi stand directly in front of the arrival hall. It takes you about 20 to 30 minutes to get to the university, the costs are about EUR 25 to EUR 35.

By bus: There is a very convenient bus service Vienna Airport Lines, which has buses going to the following locations in Vienna:

  • Vienna International Airport <-> Wien Schwedenplatz (Travel Time: 20 minutes)
    The Schwedenplatz is very central, and you find the underground/subway, taxi, trams for your onward transport.
  • Vienna International Airport <-> Wien Südtiroler Platz (Travel Time: 20 minutes)- Südbahnhof Wien (Travel Time: 25 minutes) Westbahnhof (Travel Time: 35 minutes).
    The Westbahnhof (railway station) is located in the west of Vienna, and you will find underground/subway, taxi, and tramway.
  • Vienna International Airport <-> UNO-City (Travel Time: 20 minutes)
    The UNO-City is located in the east of Vienna on the other side of the river Danube than the city center. This location is only useful if you want to travel to this side of Vienna. There you can find underground line U1.
Ticket fare: EUR 6. for a single direction.
During: 6:20 h 00:20 h, at 30 mins interval
From there you can go on by taxi or by underground/subway.
