 Call for participation

Here is a printable call for participation, in pdf format.

 Kindergarden

It is possible to make use of a day care center for children in the age of 1-10 years in the neighborhood of the conference site (Internationaler Park Kindergarten, Getreidemarkt 14). The cost of this will be in the range € 20-25 per child per day. In order to guarantee enough space for this, people that want to make use of this facility should contact the organisers well in advance, before the end of May.

 Examinations

Students that need a written confirmation of successfull participation in a course should get into contact themselves with the relevant course teachers to ask if such a confirmation can be provided. Expect this only to be possible in case of a few, well-justified exceptions.

 Location

ESSLLI 2003 will be held in the Austrian capital, Vienna, one of the most popular destinations in Europe. Today Vienna combines modern life style with the spirit of the past. Once the centre of the large Habsburg empire, Vienna has largely preserved its historic architecture. As a centre of musical life, the city is famous for its Opera House and Festivals. But Vienna is also an important European hub that houses several international organisations, and it has become even more important since the opening of the East.

 Coming to Vienna

Vienna's Airport is located southeast of the city and is served by all major airlines. All relevant information can be found here.

For train connections, consult the timetable of the federal railway company (ÖBB) at http://fahrplan.oebb.at/. There are direct services to many central european cities.

Reaching the Hotels in Pfeilgasse by public transport

 Conference Site and Public Transport

The conference sessions will take place in the Freihaus Building of the Vienna University of Technology (TU Wien), located in the downtown area, close to Karlsplatz. The TU Wien was founded in 1815. Today it is one of Austrias leading universities with about 20.000 students and 3500 employees.

The address of the Freihaus Building is:
Wiedner Hauptstraße 8-10
1040 Wien

The building is located close to the underground station "Karlsplatz", served by lines U1, U2, and U4. From there, you should take the exit "Wiedner Hauptstrasse". Once you have reached the surface, just walk 3 minuts towards the main entrance of the university building.

You can also take trams 62, 65, the "Wiener Lokalbahn" (inbound only) or bus 4A to stop "Karlsplatz".

From the Opera you can walk through the subway "Opernpassage" to the exit "Wiedner Hauptstrasse". The way and the building is marked on the follow ing image:

The opera is marked with a red O and the Karlskirche is marked with a X. TU Wien

 Public Transport

Public transport is very efficient in Vienna. You can find general information on public transport in Vienna you find here and here. A VOR ticket gives unlimited acces for one week to all public transport in the center of Vienna (this includes the area around the TUVienna where ESSLLI takes place). It is possible to order these tickets via the registration form.

 Touristic Information

An extensive account of travel information for Vienna can be found on the official webpage of the Vienna Tourist Board. The webpage of the city of Vienna offers all sorts of informations on Vienna (including tourist information).
